Everything was great, from the room to the food to the hosts and the dog.

Zao Shiki no Hotel was perfect. The staff were kind, approachable and helpful. The attention to detail/ cleanliness was exceptional. Our room was spacious, clean, warm and we loved the sweet treats, massage chair and the bath with a view of the snow. Breakfast catered to all tastes and was so convenient. The hotel is located within 5-10 minutes of town, only a short walk, and we found it very easy each day to walk to the chair lift. Google maps wasn’t often very accurate about which restaurants were open, so we quickly put our phones away and enjoyed walking the snowy town, finding hidden gems, which were always easy to walk to the hotel from. Ski hire and storage was also so great. We loved our week in Zao and could not recommend staying at Zao Shiki more!!!

The hosts went above and beyond to help us find certain things to do! Also the location is right next to the main lift which was a huge bonus!

This place feels like a cozy winter cottage and honestly felt like home. I stayed here for three nights while snowboarding at Zao Onsen Ski Resort, and it was the best place I stayed during my first trip to Japan. The house is small but extremely cozy, warm, and comfortable. The rooms are perfect for winter, and the heated floors were amazing after long cold days outside. The living room is also very cozy and a great place to relax. Everything was very clean and tidy, including the shared bathroom, which was always spotless. The location is also very convenient. Zao Onsen Ski Resort is only about 10 minutes away by bus. There is also a free shuttle, but it only runs on certain days, so I recommend asking the owner in advance. The owner provides all the information you need, which is especially helpful if it’s your first time visiting Japan. Another great bonus is that you can rent a snowboard from the property (snowboard only, no boots or bindings). There is also a taxi option from the ski resort to the house, which cost around 1100 yen, so transportation is easy even if you don’t want to rely on the shuttle. The best part of this stay was the owner. They were the kindest and most welcoming host I have ever met. They made me feel very comfortable and helped with everything. On the first night, they even shared dinner with us, which they didn’t have to do, but it made the experience feel even more special. If I ever come back to Zao in the future, I will 100% stay here again and nowhere else. Highly recommended.

It was a luxury ryokan experience at a very affordable price point. The baths were really nice, and there was a complementary option to book one private bath stance. The room was way spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was top notch. Great experience overall, and very nice as a relaxing spot after touring around Japan.

The place feels like home! Our family enjoyed our stay here as we were warmly welcomed by the owners. They were very accommodating and helpful during our stay. The location of the place was also near and convenient for people who will have skiing trips and onsen activities. The owners were kind and approachable. They gave recommendations on places you can visit as well as prepare your meals. Thank you so much for a memorable stay! We will go back again ❤️

Very nice & friendly people

Everything about our stay was wonderful! Every staff member was incredibly kind and helpful. The onsen is lovely, food is excellent with local wines and sake available, and great shuttle service which made our transit to and from nearby Zao onsen easy. It was our most memorable stay in Japan!

The property was very luxurious, clean and just very comfortable. The staff were extremely friendly and tried to accommodate with what ever I needed. Even with the language barrier they did everything exceptionally without any issues. The food was amazing also. The dinners especially were one of the major highlights for me. I tried so many new dishes and they all tasted amazing. Being locally sourced also made if that more delicious. The room was also amazing as I had my own private onsen.

The onsen on the roof was fantastic. Warm water and cold wind outside was wonderful. The rest of the hotel as also amazing. A nice castle nearby and a foot bath next to the hotel.

Amazing staff and just as equally amazing food! Such a fantastic experience. The staff went above and beyond, will definitely be coming back. Plus there is a custard pudding stand not 20ft from the premises, it’s to die for.

The interior of the hotel was created to make you feel like you were truly in the middle of the forest. I loved all of the little lounge areas and the dining room was beautiful. It was also a special treat to be greeted with a drink and snack by the fire. Staff were very helpful in calling a taxi for us to return to the station on the day of check-out.

The meals were absolutely exquisite, put together with precision and elegance. Substantial portions as well. The staff were delightful, they told us about a festival that was going on in town that was super fun to enjoy. I loved experiencing a traditional Japanese futon as well as the rotenburo that was attached to our room. I can’t say enough nice things about this hotel.

This is an amazing property run by attentive and kind staff who provide excellent and seamless service. We booked one of the rooms (Anemone) with a private onsen tub and it was so relaxing and peaceful. The beds were also so comfy and the massage chair was a fun surprise! We loved the cozy yet elegant decor throughout and all amenities available to guests enhanced the stay, especially the evening wine/whiskey in the lobby, and the chance to use a variety of colorful yukata. The staff, especially the young woman who welcomed and served us most meals, was phenomenal and so kind in explaining all the dishes and pointing out local specialities. Speaking of the food, it's delicious! Each kaiseki dinner was carefully crafted and a true joy. The property is a short walk (15 min) or taxi from Kaminoyamaonsen station and was convenient for our day trips to Zao and Yamadera. Do yourself a favor and visit this gem.
