building 2020. interesting architecture. room balcony has herbs growing. european appliances, not asian. great layout. kitchen cooks there own bread. eggs and some herbs are from their own garden. Peter and his breakfast crew are top notch. what a great place.

Great for fans of brutalist communist architecture, mid size eastern EU towns and budget kebabs. Nice people, I passed through the town at least 20 times over the years, on my way to Poprad Tatra airport and the two other international airports in Slovakia. Most cigarettes at around 5euro/pack of 20. Nice food stalls at the train station. New working lifts to most (or all?) platforms at the station. Train station newly rebuild with huge investment, it seems. Unusual - two different halls/waiting areas, one big one, the old style socialist, one smaller, new, close to escalators and said lifts. Town is a centre for local industry and some major construction firms. Sadly, the Vietnamese restaurant at big TESCO - not recommended! Taxi from trains to big Tesco is 4 or 5 euro max.

Nice, sweet place, easy to find. It's packed with hotels and B&B's
There is a grocery shop and a few stalls on the main square. Also a ping-pong table and man size chess on the square next to the ping-pong table. You can borrow the paddles and chess pieces from there somewhre, just ask at your hotel. We brought our paddles & ball so didn't need theirs.
Would be worth visiting the SPA in Afrodita hotel, but we only stayed for 1 night and headed to the Lietava Castle in the morning.

Beautiful architecture and layout of the city. Food and drink are reasonably priced. One can easily walk everywhere, but there is a trolley bus service. People are very friendly—a variety of restaurants.

Our main goal was visiting Mala Fatra mountain range - which...
Our main goal was visiting Mala Fatra mountain range - which was an excellent trip that we enjoyed very much - and traditional village Čičmany which was also a very interesting place.
But, Žilina is also interesting place with very beautiful main square and lively restaurants with good food.
From less ordinary places I can recommend visit to the railway station with some old signs from the times of Czechoslovakia and glass stained windows with motifs from the traditional folk culture.
The garden close to the railway station (3 minute walk) is also nice with some interesting sculptures.
If I would have 1-2 more days I would rent a bike and explore the town's side streets and suburbs in search of everyday's atmosphere, interesting details, murals, local caffes ... I find it in every place that I visit and I'm sure Žilina has a plenty of them.
