The UK is home to a wide variety of destinations perfect for a Mother’s Day weekend:
  • Consider York for a city break – its cobbled streets are packed with historic gems and top restaurants
  • The Cotswolds make for a dream countryside getaway, with picture postcard villages and high-end spa hotels
  • A trip to St Ives means upscale restaurants and quirky boutiques by a beautiful coastline

Flowers and chocolates are great, but when it comes to Mother’s Day, it’s hard to beat the gift of time together. So this Mother’s Day weekend, why not whisk your mom away somewhere lovely to make precious memories together? Whether your mom prefers the bright lights of a big city, strolling in the tranquil countryside, or escaping to the coast, you’ll find a destination in the UK that she’ll love.

When is Mother’s Day weekend in the UK?

It’s easy to miss Mother’s Day in the UK, as it has no fixed date. In the UK, Mother’s Day—historically known as “Mothering Sunday”—falls on the fourth Sunday of the Christian festival of Lent, which takes place in the six weeks leading up to Easter.

Classic city breaks for Mother’s Day weekend

If a true treat for your mom means shopping, culture, and swanky restaurants, it’s got to be a city break. Here are three of the best the UK has to offer.

1. Afternoon tea and the West End in London

Whatever your mom is into, you’ll find something to delight her in London this Mother’s Day weekend. The streets of the UK capital are jam-packed with world-famous attractions, cultural highlights, and hidden gems. Tour ancient, famous landmarks like the Tower of London, take in artworks at the Tate Modern, go antiques shopping on Portobello road, or embark on a foodie crawl in Soho or Shoreditch

But one of the best Mother’s Day treats in London has got to be an elegant afternoon tea at one of the capital’s well-known hotels, followed by dinner and a show in the West End.

Many hotels in London serve up a sumptuous afternoon tea – think freshly baked scones and pastries and exquisitely-decorated cakes, accompanied by a pot of tea or a glass of champagne. For a five-star experience, book afternoon tea at The Ritz, Claridge’s or The Savoy

When it comes to your theater experience, choose between blockbuster musicals from The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables to Hamilton and The Lion King

2. Historic charm and boutique pampering in Edinburgh

Up in Scotland, elegant Edinburgh offers a more laid back Mother’s Day weekend. Book into one of the Scottish capital’s spa hotels to treat your mom to pampering in ultra-luxe surroundings.

Consider the legendary Balmoral Hotel, which features five-star accommodation and a serene spa in the heart of the city. Alternatively, the Sheraton Grand Hotel is home to an award-winning spa which includes a rooftop hydropool and thermal suite.

Away from the hotel, stroll around the UNESCO World Heritage city center, visit the Royal Botanic Garden, and indulge in some of the city’s top food lover spots (Edinburgh features seven Michelin-starred restaurants). Alternatively, step back in time with a trip to Edinburgh Castle or, if it’s your mom’s kind of thing, a spooky underground ghost tour.

Cap off your day by embracing Scotland’s favored tipple with a whisky tasting, before heading to a jazz bar for a sophisticated night out together.

3. Cozy pubs and independent shops in historic York

Historic York is the perfect location for a Mother’s Day getaway. Everything in this cobbled city is steeped in history, from the soaring York Minster and the Shambles (a street of stores dating back over 900 years) to its cozy pubs and hotels.

Why not kick off your Mother’s Day celebrations with brunch at The Ivy, before a peaceful stroll through York’s Museum Gardens. Does your mom have a sweet tooth? Head straight for York’s Chocolate Story – an interactive museum that reveals the city’s chocolate-making history. Then it’s time to hit The Shambles to browse the ancient, independent shops there. Next, bond over a glass of wine or a pint of real ale in one of York’s historic watering holes. The House of Trembling Madness, for example, is housed in a building that dates back to 1180 C.E.

Relaxing rural Mother’s Day trips

Is your mom less of a city person and more of a rural soul? Fortunately, the UK has no shortage of gorgeous countryside destinations perfect for relaxing and making memories in the great outdoors.

1. Idyllic villages and country pubs in the Cotswolds

When it comes to upscale countryside escapes, it’s hard to beat the Cotswolds. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is famed for its market towns, little villages, and rolling hills. This is picture postcard England and is a perfect option for a memorable Mother’s Day weekend away.

During your trip, visit quintessential Cotswolds destinations like Bourton-on-the-Water, Chipping Campden, and Stow-on-the-Wold for a spot of shopping and exploring. Historic attractions nearby include Sudeley Castle and Blenheim Palace. And don’t forget to schedule in a long, lazy lunch at one of the area’s historic country pubs. The Porch House, for example, is said to date back to 947 C.E. and today serves up seasonal British dishes.

After all that exploring, there’s nothing quite like returning to a sumptuous hotel and sinking into the spa. Cowley Manor Experimental, for instance, encompasses truly extravagant rooms, some with four-poster beds and terraces, as well as a state-of-the-art spa complete with an indulgent treatment menu.

2. Scenic walks and literary landmarks in the Lake District

Whisk your mom away to a retreat in the UNESCO-crowned Lake District for hikes, quaint  villages, boat cruises, and sightseeing.

If your mom is into outdoor pursuits, the Lake District is a great choice. Here, you can hike Scafell Pike (England’s highest peak) or try your hand at rock climbing, ghyll scrambling, or paddleboarding.

But if your mother prefers to experience the great outdoors at a more relaxed pace, there’s still plenty to get stuck into in the Lakes. Cruise across Windermere, Derwentwater, or Ullswater on a boat trip with stunning views, ride the Ravenglass & Eskdale heritage railway, or visit some literary landmarks (poet William Wordsworth and children’s author Beatrix Potter both lived here). There are plenty of beautiful gentle hikes to try too.

3. Boat trips and wildlife spotting in the Norfolk Broads

Keen to embrace a slower pace of life this Mother’s Day? Explore the reed-lined waterways of the tranquil Norfolk Broads. This beautiful area of England offers plenty of boating, walking, and cycling opportunities and is peppered with wonderful villages to explore. There are plenty of comfortable country house hotels around the Broads to check into.

Boating is the name of the game in the Norfolk Broads (not to mention a fantastic way to make memories with your mom), so head to Hickling Broad or Wroxham to rent a vessel and glide down the waterways, spotting interesting birdlife along the route. Stopping for lunch at a riverside pub (many have moorings for boaters) is all part of the experience.

Other highlights in the Norfolk Broads include the sandy beaches of Holkham National Nature Reserve, and Burnham Market – a village with plenty of independent stores and cafes.

Coastal getaways for Mother’s Day weekend

If salt, sand, and fish ‘n’ chips sounds like Mother’s Day heaven, then cruise to the coast. From classic seaside fun (think amusement arcades and ice cream on the beach) and dramatic clifftop walks, to food lover gems and cultural hotspots, the UK offers plenty of variety when it comes to coastal escapes.

1. Fresh seafood and art galleries in St Ives

A strong contender for the most beloved coastal destination in the UK, St Ives is renowned for its artistic legacy and gastronomical hotspots as much as it is for its golden sands and clear waters. It’s a truly dreamy destination for Mother’s Day trips.

In the morning, visit the Tate St Ives or the Barbara Hepworth Museum & Sculpture Garden before relaxing on the beach in the afternoon. It’s also a real joy to just meander along St Ives’ cobbled streets, stopping in at quirky boutiques, galleries, and craft stores.

Cornwall is a top gastronomical destination too, with many restaurants making the most of the Atlantic’s plentiful bounty. If your mom is a culinary enthusiast, book a table at Rick Stein's Café in Padstow, where Asian cuisine meets Cornish seafood or go for Paul Ainsworth at No.6, which features a Michelin Star and serves up the finest Cornish produce.

2. Boat tours and sandy beaches in Tenby

From its pastel-hued Georgian houses and sheltered harbor to its quaint cafes and independent boutiques, everything about the Welsh town of Tenby is delightful. It also features plenty of medieval attractions, including well-preserved 13th-century town walls and an 800-year-old ruined castle. Then, of course, there are the golden sandy beaches.

On a sunny day, wander the delightful streets, before treating your mom to an ice cream and hitting one of Tenby’s beaches. If the weather is less pleasant, hole up in one of the town’s cozy cafes or pubs or consider visiting the Tudor Merchant’s House.

Keen to make the most of the coast? A wide variety of boat trips operate from Tenby Harbour. You can explore the waters around the South Pembrokeshire islands and get up close to gray seals and seabirds or hop on a ferry across to Caldey Island, where you’ll find a monastery, beaches, walking paths, and a famous chocolate factory. For a really special experience, book a dolphin spotting boat trip from a nearby harbor such as St David’s.

3. Clifftop walks and historic harbours on the North Yorkshire coast

The North Yorkshire Coast is peppered with brilliant seaside towns, all offering something a bit different. For dramatic scenery, Dracula lore, and award-winning fish and chips, visit Whitby. Scarborough offers a traditional seaside experience: Think amusements, sticks of rock, and two beaches. Then there’s the pretty, atmospheric Robin Hood’s Bay – the tiny, artsy fishing village of Staithes and Victorian Saltburn-by-the-Sea, with its surfer scene, indie stores, and vintage charm.

Any of these seaside towns would make for a fantastic Mother’s Day weekend away, but why not stay for a few more days and explore the whole coast?
