Guided tour from a 900s stone castle to Ghent's Belgium Silicon Valley, covering architecture and Charles V birthplace

Duration: 2 hours
Service animals welcome

Ghent is presented as a hidden gem of Belgium, a living city whose rich past is visible in its architecture. The tour will start at a stone castle dating to the 900s and move through key sites that illustrate how the city grew and changed. Along the way you will see the architectural styles that mark Ghent’s long history and learn how those buildings reflect the city’s role in European events.

As you move through the city, the focus will be on the story of the Holy Roman Empire as it touched Ghent, told through the life of the city’s most famous figure, Emperor Charles V. You will learn about his birth in the Counts of Flandre castle and his later rule over much of Europe. The tour will end in what is sometimes called Belgium’s Silicon Valley, an alternative name for Ghent, tying the city’s medieval past to its modern identity.
