You’ll take a scenic drive up the Southern Shore along Newfoundland’s Irish Loop, following pretty coastal roadways that link a series of outport fishing communities. Along the way you’ll notice architecture and development that reflects an era of opulence thought unimaginable for this period in North American history, giving a striking contrast to the rugged coastline and traditional village scenes.

As you move through these small communities, you’ll meet fascinating characters and get a feel for local life. The experience includes a visit to the Colony of Avalon archaeological site, where you’ll absorb the scale and richness of the luxury items unearthed there. Together, the coastal drive, the people you encounter and the finds at the Colony of Avalon will give you a layered sense of how wealth, settlement and seafaring life shaped this part of Newfoundland.
