You’ll explore the Pula Arena, the city’s most important historical monument. This grand amphitheatre was built in the 1st century AD under Emperor Vespasian, around the same time as Rome’s Colosseum, and is counted among the largest amphitheatres in the world. Its elliptical plan measures about 130 metres along the long axis and about 100 metres across the short axis, and the entire structure is constructed from local limestone. As you move through the site you’ll see how restorations have preserved a venue that still seats around 5,000 people and is used in summer for festivals and performances. You’ll also access the underground passages once used by gladiators and visit a permanent exhibition of amphorae and the equipment used in ancient olive oil production, which offer further insight into everyday life and spectacles in Roman Pula.
