Experience the evening atmosphere of Varanasi with a boat ride along the sacred Ganges River. As you drift past the riverbank, you will see ancient cremation grounds and the colourful, bustling ghats from a different perspective. This calm, riverside approach will lead into the main event of the night: the Ganga Aarti. Aarti is a deeply spiritual Hindu ritual in which light is offered to deities while priests chant devotional songs. In Varanasi the Ganges is worshipped as a goddess, and every evening the ceremony is performed at the historic Dashashwamedh Ghat. You will be able to watch the ritual either from the ghat on a private balcony or from the boat itself. The ceremony is carried out with precise choreography and a mix of bells, drums, cymbals and Sanskrit mantras by the priests, creating a powerful sensory experience. Along the way you will absorb both the quiet of the river and the ritual’s rhythmic energy, giving a clear sense of the city’s spiritual life.

On this tour you will see Varanasi from a different angle, exploring themes of life and death that run through the city. You will visit the Mahashamstana (the great cremation ground) and sacred fertility ponds, then move in semi-darkness to the Ashram of the Aghor, a centre of tantric non-dualism. Along the way you will learn about the Aghor tradition and the black-clothed renunciants who are known to meditate in the cremation grounds. Varanasi is both the religious capital of India and a place where Aghoris live and practise. The tour will touch on how these two aspects coexist in the same city and why many people come to the cremation grounds to perform last rites. It is said that such rites may break the cycle of rebirth and grant Moksha (liberation from rebirth impelled by the law of Karma). The experience concludes with worship at a temple carried out according to local ritual.
