This guided tour, available in English or Italian, centres on the Salt Museum and the adjacent ancient windmill dating from the 1400s. The museum sits inside an old Sicilian baglio and is listed in the official European Union guide. In the first part of the visit a guide will explain the traditional phases of salt production and share the history of the family that has managed the salt pans for generations. You will also hear about the longstanding relationship between salt production and the sea. The second part takes you on a walk around the perimeter of the salt pans within a WWF Nature Reserve. Along the edges of the salt basins you’ll notice the changing colours shaped by salt, seawater, clay and reflections of light. As you move through the area you may observe how salt forms in the basins and follow the stages that transform seawater into salt. The visit is suitable for all age groups.
