This tour offers an up-close and personal encounter with the ocean’s 'gentle giants'. From June to December you will mostly encounter Southern Right whales, along with seals, penguins and a variety of marine birds. You will often see dolphins, Bryde’s whales and Humpback whales as well, though sightings may vary. The experience is informative and educational, so along the way you will hear background about the animals and the marine environment. As you observe the wildlife, you will have opportunities to learn about species behaviour and their presence in these waters, while keeping the focus on respectful, close viewing of the animals you encounter.

Setting out from Gansbaai, you will head into the waters around the world‑famous Dyer Island, an area known for its rich marine life. As you move through the bay, you may encounter the Marine Big 5: Southern Right Whales, Humpback and Bryde’s whales, various shark species, the endangered African Penguin and visiting dolphin species. The waters here are also home to many seabirds, adding colour and activity along the way. Alongside these larger animals, you may spot the huge Cape fur seal colony on nearby Geyser Rock, which numbers around 60 000. Sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the variety of species typical to this area means each trip offers the chance to observe different behaviours and interactions in their natural setting. The experience focuses on exploring and witnessing the local marine wildlife as you travel around Dyer Island and its neighbouring landmarks.

This land-based whale-watching experience in Walker Bay draws on 20 years of photographing and observing the Southern Right Whales that visit the area annually. Your guide considers themselves a whale behavioural specialist and will share that knowledge in an interactive way. Along the shore, you will hear personal stories and insights gathered over two decades and learn about the behavioural patterns of these whales. You may also have the opportunity to spot Southern Right Whales as they move through the bay. Along the way, your guide will talk about the town of Hermanus and the local whale-watching scene. In the village of the oaks you will wander down shady oak avenues lined by the water furrows of the Mill Stream. Along the way you will admire the charm and harmony of Cape Dutch architecture that shapes the townscape. As you move through streets and squares, you will hear tales about the colourful people who have lived here across three centuries. You will also visit the banks of the Eerste River to see where Simon van der Stel set up camp and learn why the river carries that name. Dorp Street, known historically as “the wagon way to Cape Town”, will show you why it is still recognised as the oldest residential street in South Africa today. The experience combines leafy scenery, architectural character and local stories to give a clear sense of the village’s past and present.

In Hermanus, you will take a gentle walk along paved cliff-top pathways with an experienced whale-watching guide. The route follows scenic coastal cliffs and takes you to hidden coves and inlets where whales frequently frolic. Because the cliffs are vertical in places, whales can sometimes be only a few metres away. The tour begins with a visit to the local Whale Museum; the museum entrance fee is included. You will travel between 5 to 7 separate viewing spots, typically 2 to 4 km apart, by a luxury 7‑seater kombi minibus (larger vehicles are available). At each stop you will have time to wander the shorelines and cliff paths as your guide points out good vantage points and shares local information about the whales and the coastline. Tours can be arranged at a time that suits you. Minimum group size is two people.

You’ll explore the surrounding area of Stellenbosch and its wine route using a hop-on, hop-off service that runs Mondays to Fridays. The route goes to five different wine estates during the day, so you can plan your own pace and choose which places to visit. Benguela Cove boasts the longest stretch of ocean-facing vineyards—2.6 km—and these vines are grown at a very low altitude, just 2.7 metres above sea level. Along the way you’ll see how the vineyards run towards the ocean and may learn about the estate’s unusual location and its effect on the vines. The visit gives you a clear sense of why this part of the coastline is notable for viticulture and lets you take in the unique combination of vine rows and sea views.
