On this tour you will learn the history of Cape Verde and see Portuguese-built constructions thought to date from the 14th century. As you move through the island of Santiago, you'll hear how it was discovered by António da Noli, a Genoese in Portuguese service, in 1460. You will visit Ribeira Grande, where da Noli and settlers from the Algarve and Alentejo established themselves in 1462. The abundance of water from the river Ribeira Grande gave that settlement an advantage over the other early settlement on Santiago, Alcatrazes.
Along the way you will learn how Ribeira Grande became a key port of call for Portuguese colonisation towards Africa and South America. In the 16th and 17th centuries the island served as a centre of maritime trade linking Africa, the Cape, Brazil and the Caribbean. Because of its proximity to the African coast, it also functioned as an important platform in the trade of enslaved persons.
