Duration: 2 hours
Service animals welcome

The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial sits on an exceptionally beautiful hilly site north of Madrid and evokes the Golden Age of the Spanish Empire. Built by King Philip II, the complex was intended to house the royal mausoleum and a grand basilica established to provide constant prayer for the kings’ soul. It also includes the Bourbons Palace with its priceless art collections alongside other architecturally impressive buildings.

As you move through the site, you will see The Basilica, the central building of the complex, and the Chapter Rooms. You will descend to the underground Royal Burial Chambers where the royal mausoleum is located. You will also visit the Palace of Prince Philip II and finish by viewing the art housed in Bourbons Palace. Along the way, the layout and historic purpose of each space will be clear, giving context to the architecture and collections you encounter.
