This is a long, tough linear mountain hike along the famous Nantlle Ridge, with wild, steep hillsides and rocky crests. The ridge is made up of several summits and involves around 1,100 m of ascent. If you start in Rhyd Ddu and finish near Nebo in the Nantlle Valley the route is roughly 10 km; a return to Rhyd Ddu makes it about 19 km. Along the way you’ll move across a skyline that rivals Crib Goch in sharpness, but is generally more escapable. There’s even a local rumour that the SAS use the ridge for night-time training — it’s certainly demanding terrain.
The meeting point is close to the tiny village of Rhyd Ddu. You should have good hiking fitness and be prepared for varied ground underfoot, from wet and boggy sections to heath, heather and rocky summits. Bring sturdy mountain boots for ankle support, clothing to match the forecast and season (lighter layers in summer, warmer layers in winter), hiking trousers, a base layer, fleece, waterproof shell and waterproof over-trousers; boot gaiters are useful in the wetter months. Take a small rucksack with food, water, a warm hat, gloves and other personal items. If you’d rather not plan routes or navigate in poor visibility, a qualified Mountain Leader will take care of navigation and route choices, and can advise on specific clothing and footwear once you’ve booked.
