In the Kartli region you will explore a wide range of cultural sites and changing landscapes that date back to the first half of the third millennium BC. The remains here span from the classical period to the medieval era and have been altered many times. As you move through the area, you will see how each layer of ground holds memories of different epochs and learn how the region served as the home of gods and their earthly embodiment—priests, chiefs and kings.
Along the way you will encounter evidence of Kartli’s role as a crossroads between east and west. An ancient arterial road still cuts through the rocky terrain and preserves clear traces of wheeled transport used here over centuries. You will also learn about the region’s religious history, which at times came under the influence of Mithraism or Zoroastrianism. Sovereign priests performed pagan rituals here: on certain altars they offered sacrifice, glorified a female divinity and kept a holy fire burning. These themes and sites will be continued and explored during the tour.
