You will visit the excavation site of the Palace of Knossos, a Minoan complex dating to around 2000 BC. As you move through the ruins, you will see remains of the once-prosperous Minoan capital and learn about its role as the traditional residence of King Minos. The palace’s intricate layout of many rooms has long prompted the suggestion that it inspired the mythical labyrinth. When the site was excavated in modern times, archaeologists uncovered evidence of one of Europe’s earliest advanced civilisations.
The excursion continues with a visit to the Museum of Heraklion, where you will view the largest collection of Minoan finds from Crete. Along the way you will gain a clearer picture of Minoan art, daily life and craftsmanship through the objects on display. Together, the ruins at Knossos and the museum’s artefacts will give you a connected sense of this ancient civilisation and its lasting importance to Crete’s history.
