You'll head onto Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, to walk on the ice, explore the blue canyons carved within it and visit one or more naturally formed ice caves, depending on conditions. The route focuses on quieter, less-visited spots so you can hear the silence of the ice and take your time for photos. Along the way your guide will point out features of the glacier and explain how the caves form as you move through these striking, ever-changing spaces.
Groups are kept small (maximum eight travellers) for genuine, personal attention from local guides based in Höfn. The guides — Stefan, Vigfús, Dana and Sindri — are named in over 50 five-star reviews. All guides hold AIMG certifications (Ice Hard 1, 2 or 3), have completed the AIMG Ice Cave course and are Wilderness First Responders (WFR), so you’ll be on the ice with trained professionals rather than part-time guides. Your safety gear — crampons, helmet and headlight — is provided, and each morning the guide assesses conditions and selects the best, quietest cave to visit.
