No car required: you’ll travel from Reykjavík along the scenic South Coast, stopping at the iconic Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss before heading to the village of Vík. From there you’ll climb aboard a powerful Super Jeep for an off-road ride across dramatic volcanic plains that leads to the Katla Glacier, an outlet of Mýrdalsjökull.
You’ll step inside the ever-changing Katla Ice Cave and see bright blue ice streaked with layers of volcanic ash. The formations are often likened to the “dragon glass” of Game of Thrones. A certified glacier guide will be with you to explain the cave’s formation and history, and to make sure you are safe; all necessary safety gear is included. This is an opportunity to explore a living glacier and to observe how volcanic activity and ice interact, giving a direct view of Iceland’s contrasting natural forces.
