Trullo Sovrano is a rare and striking example of traditional Apulian trullo architecture. You will see the only trullo with a raised floor, reached from the interior by a masonry staircase, a feature that sets it apart from other examples. Its majestic conical dome, about 14 metres high, rises in the centre of a cluster of twelve cones, giving a strong sense of scale as you view the structure.
As you take in the building, you will observe details that mark it as a transitional work in the history of trulli. It was among the first to be built using mortar, and it adopted distinctive construction solutions whose creator remains unknown. These characteristics show the shift in building technique and make Trullo Sovrano one of the most advanced and admired interpretations of trullo architecture. Along the way you will be able to appreciate both its unusual internal layout and the imposing external dome that together illustrate this pivotal moment in the development of the trulli tradition.
