At Palazzo Vecchio, one of Florence’s most important symbols, you will see a fine example of medieval civil architecture. When you visit the palace, you will have the opportunity to enter the Salone dei Cinquecento, a majestic hall measuring 54 metres by 23 metres. The hall was built in only seven months by Simone del Pollaiolo by the will of Girolamo Savonarola.

As you move through the Salone, you’ll learn that when Cosimo I de Medici was named Duke and settled in the Palazzo Vecchio, he used the hall as a representation space to receive ambassadors and the people. The ceiling is presented in the form of drawers and is decorated with a series of paintings that celebrate the life of Cosimo I. The statues in the hall represent the “Fatiche di Ercole”, while the Vasari frescoes on the walls portray the successes of Cosimo. You will also see that the building was once known as the Palazzo dei Priori and changed its name in the 15th century to Palazzo della Signoria.
