About an hour from Tokyo by public transport, Oshijo Castle in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture, offers a hands-on way to connect with Japan’s past. The castle is recognised as a Japanese Heritage Site, and this experience centres on trying on traditional armour at the castle itself.
You will wear samurai armour and move around Oshijo Castle and the surrounding castle town of Gyoda in samurai costume. The plan is designed to let you feel like a samurai in a casual, approachable way as you explore the castle grounds and the nearby town. Along the way you may notice local features of the castle and streets that reflect Gyoda’s history, while enjoying the visual and physical experience of the armour.
