Ouchi Kemari Experience

A Muromachi-period costume kemari activity in Yamaguchi City with participants using a handmade mari ball

Free cancellation available
Up to 24 hours before the start time
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

In Yamaguchi City — which was selected for The New York Times’ list of “52 Places to Go in 2024” — you will take part in a historical recreation linked to the city’s past. Yamaguchi was ruled and developed by the Ouchi clan during the Muromachi period (1336–1573), and this activity has been arranged as Ouchi kemari based on the assumption that the Ouchi might also have enjoyed kemari.

You will wear Muromachi-style costumes and play kemari using a specially handmade mari ball. The experience offers a hands-on way to engage with the era: dressed in period-style clothing, you’ll join others in the traditional game as envisaged for the Ouchi setting, giving a tactile sense of historical pastime and attire without making claims beyond what is known.
