In the village of Kalnciems, beside the river and the surrounding peat bogs, you’ll find a Soviet‑era building from 1980 that has stood unused for decades and currently holds slum status. Since 2019, private family funds have supported cleaning and gradual renovation of the site. The work is ongoing, so when you visit you may see different stages of restoration as the project progresses.
The aim is to turn the building into a Peat House: a peat art museum that will also include a peat workshop and a research centre. Along the way you’ll learn about traditional peat preparation, which the project mainly carries out by handmade methods, and about local practices and crafts that have been developed since 2008. The Peat Museum seeks to summarise and publish the course of those traditions, so your visit will give you insight into both the artistic and research intentions behind the site as it evolves.
