At the Barza Alba (The White Stork) distillery in Bălţi, Republic of Moldova, you'll learn about the traditional production of Divin — the local name for brandy. Produced by double distillation from local wine, these wine spirits are aged for at least three years in oak barrels. The name Divin comes from the Romanian phrase din vin, meaning from wine, and also evokes the word divine in Romanian. It is often said that a large part of the distillate evaporates during ageing, as if some of it goes to the sky to ensure the drink’s quality.
A company that began operating in 1944 as a Factory of Wine and Brandy in Bălţi, Barza Alba is one of the largest Divin producers in the country. A sommelier from the distillery will guide you through the history and unique qualities of Brandy, Divin and Rachiu from apple cider, and will teach you how to distinguish the different types, aromas, colours and tastes. Along the way, you’ll gain a clearer understanding of how production and ageing influence the final spirit.
