The Sea of Cortez, off Los Cabos, offers diving among an unusually rich range of marine life while still feeling relatively unexplored. If you’re interested in marine biology, underwater photography or a more adventurous kind of dive, you’ll find plenty to observe and capture beneath the surface. The water here is remarkably clear, which makes long-range viewing and photography easier than at many tropical sites.
Along the way you’ll encounter one of the few living coral reefs on the North American continent at Cabo Pulmo. Around this reef you’ll see a spectrum of soft and hard corals and variegated sponges, and you can expect to spot a range of prismatic tropical fish. You may also see more exotic species, such as sea turtles, manta rays, reef sharks, moray eels, octopuses and various crustaceans and mollusks, depending on conditions and season. These encounters will give you a strong sense of the area’s biodiversity and plenty of moments to observe marine life up close.
