At Alcobaça Monastery you will visit a place where an enduring love story is remembered. The site is the resting place of Pedro and Inês: Pedro was a prince whose lover was brutally assassinated for political reasons. When he later became King he had the assassins killed; legend has it their hearts were removed as part of his revenge. Inês was crowned Queen of Portugal after her death. You will hear the history and the personal stories that surround these figures as part of the monastery’s past.

As you move through this ancient Cistercian centre — one of the largest in Europe — you will learn about monastic life and how the motto “Pray and Work” shaped daily routines and the architecture you see. Along the way you will also discover the monks’ more worldly legacy, including local pastry and Ginjinha, which became part of the area’s culture. The visit will weave together religious history, daily life, and the human stories that make Alcobaça memorable.
