On the drier northwestern side of Mount Kenya, near Nanyuki, this route offers more scenic walking than the Naromoru approach. You will climb through forest and emerge onto a wide ridge that leads toward the summit area. Along the way you will enjoy open ridgelines and the kind of terrain that makes for some of the finest walking on the mountain. Access on this side is adequate, and the bunk house facilities here are the best on this flank of the mountain.
The route starts close to Nanyuki town, and although the summit is reachable via this approach, an overnight acclimatisation at the base in Nanyuki is strongly recommended. That extra night can be arranged for an additional fee. The description focuses on the route, the landscape and the accommodation on this side of Mount Kenya to help you plan what to expect.
At the waterfall you'll take on the highest waterfall cable climb in the world on a Level 1 via ferrata. The route is ideal for people who love the outdoors, waterfalls and beautiful places. It suits beginners, families and hesitant adventurers with basic fitness, and no previous experience is required.
A friendly guide will meet you at the waterfall, fit your safety gear and show you how to use the equipment before you begin. The climb involves physical sections on steel ladder rungs and four wire-bridge crossings. Along the way you'll move through dramatic vertical terrain and finish at a beautiful picnic spot. From there you will walk down a mountain trail back to the base.
If you want a greater challenge, you may consider the intermediate Level 2 climb for a more adventurous exploration of this vertical world.
