You will sail between the mountains on Lake Champlain aboard a classic Friendship Sloop, getting a unique view of Vermont from the water. A licenced captain and deckhand will be on board to keep you safe, relaxed and entertained. Public cruises will never carry more than 10 guests, and Friend Ship and Wild Rose are nearly identical vessels, so the experience is the same whichever boat you choose. Private cruises and other experiences are offered separately. Bring your own food and drink to make the outing special; the crew provides ice water, wine glasses, cups, plates, napkins and cutting boards. Along the way, the crew will share local knowledge, stories and legends that explain why this region is historically unique. The sloops themselves — with bronze hardware, intricate rigging and richly detailed woodwork — offer a traditional sailing atmosphere that complements those tales. Originally designed in 1904 for lobster and cod fishing in Maine, these wooden-rigged Friendship Sloops were built to be safe and sturdy in any weather. Their stability, comfort and charm make them well suited to sailing Lake Champlain and enjoying the scenery as you glide across the water.

You’ll begin in Montpelier, Vermont’s capital and the smallest state capital in the nation. While there, you’ll enjoy a guided tour of the Vermont State House led by a dedicated guide who will share its history and answer questions. Guided tours in the Vermont State House are only available from early July through October. The building is closed to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays, so weekend tours will instead admire the State House from outside and then explore downtown Montpelier on foot. You’ll also visit the family-run Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks for a maple syrup tasting. After that, you’ll travel along scenic VT RT 100 to the villages of Waitsfield and Warren, passing landmarks such as the 1833 covered bridge known as “The Big Eddy” and the Appalachian Gap. Lunch is available for purchase at the Warren Store, a distinctly Vermont spot that features its own deli, bakery, wine shop and gift store. Along the way, you’ll see classic Vermont village sights and enjoy commentary that highlights local history and traditions.
