Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

This self-guided, self-paced audio walking tour takes you through Cannery Row in Monterey, California, and the surrounding area. As you move along the waterfront you'll pass a number of hotels and historic sites. The tour explains local history and points of interest; note that there is a separate admission charge for entrance to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Along the way you'll hear how Cannery Row served as the industrial heart of Monterey in the first half of the 1900s. The area’s seemingly inexhaustible supply of Pacific sardine drew fishermen, investors and inventors from around the world, and the narration explains how overfishing eventually decimated the industry by the 1950s. You’ll also learn about the connection between John Steinbeck and the neighbourhood, meeting some of the colourful characters he immortalised in his novel Cannery Row and its sequel Sweet Thursday. Finally, the tour tells the story of how the district quite literally rose from the ashes to become the welcoming waterfront it is today, with world-class hotels, wine rooms, restaurants and shopping opportunities lining the shore.
