In the high elevations of the Great Smoky Mountains you will travel past the Appalachian Trail and follow the Crest of the Smokies, taking in sights that sit above 5,000 ft. Along the way your guide will share Native American stories and geographical facts that help the landscape make sense. You will cross into the North Carolina side of the National Park to enjoy sweeping vistas and to learn about the impact logging once had here. You may be surprised at how the forest has reclaimed itself over the years as you compare past and present images of the area.

The goal of the trip is to reach the Clingmans Dome parking area and gift shop, the highest point in the National Park at 6,643′. If the weather permits, you may take an optional short walk through the spruce‑fir forest to experience and learn about this unique high‑elevation environment. Throughout the journey you will combine panoramic views with cultural and natural history, gaining context that will change how you see these mountains.
