If someone asks what not to miss in Portland, this roughly 5-mile (8–10 km) hike in Forest Park is a favourite. Within minutes of leaving the street you’ll step into a different world of mossy trails, tall trees and varied terrain. The route gains about 900 ft (roughly 300 metres) in elevation, so expect steady climbs and rewarding viewpoints as you move through the forest.

There are two departures to choose from, both covering similar terrain and both passing iconic spots such as the Japanese Garden, Pittock Mansion and Witch’s Castle, but each takes a different approach to the forest. The classic route focuses on a Northwest Portland experience and typically finishes at the International Rose Test Garden when it’s in season. A limited afternoon option is also available, and once a week an alternate afternoon hike starts in Goose Hollow and winds through neighbourhoods before climbing into the park. Along the way you’ll learn about the park’s place on the city’s edge and often find yourself surprised that you’re still within Portland.
