This is a lovely "beach house" in a rather "off-the-beaten-track" part of Japan, at least outside of high summer season. It's actually not on the beach but exudes that vibe and is only a ten minute walk from the proper seaside. Great sauna, beautifully clean, and easy access. The neighborhood is more traditional and lovely, but dining options are limited for those without transport.

This is the classic traditional Japanese house, which I really enjoyed having the experience of staying at. The owner has pretty good English skills and can give some great recommendations for places to eat or stuff to see in Hagi. I was lucky enough that I went during the firefly season and the owner was so nice to invite me to go with his friends to see them at night (amazing experience I was able to get some photos of them although they just look like little lights in my photos). As well if you are a bird lover, there are local hawks(?not actually too sure about the specific breed) that hang around the beach closest to the hostel but do be careful to keep an eye out for them as one scared the heck out of me trying to take my carrot out of my hand when I was having a snack by the ocean. I absolutely ran away after that to a picnic bench beside the former domain boat house to finish my snack, (I’m a bit scared of birds though) but I’m happy I had that experience🤣.

The hotel is located on a peninsula outside of Hagi city center. The hotel offers a free shuttle service, that needs to be reserved before. There are 3 buses in the morning to Hagi city center and 3 buses in the evening to the hotel. However, you can also just take a regular bus from the city to the beginning of the peninsula and then just walk 15min uphill to the hotel. The staff speaks enough English to get by and they are all very kind. The rooms are clean, spaceous and the futons are comfy. The staff prepares them for you during dinner. And the dinner is absolutely amazing! So many courses and all of them very tasty. I liked the fact they had an explanation infographic on when each dish is served and how to eat it. I still wasn't sure how to eat some of them, as I'm not used to seafood, but I still very much enjoyed it. The breakfast is super tasty and big too! The hotel also has and onsen with a stunning view over the sea! Very enjoyable in the early morning before breakfast. If you have time, make sure to take a walk/hike to the Camellia groves!
