San Carlos de Bariloche is located on the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake and surrounded by the magnificent Nahuel Huapi National Park. Perched among 2000-metre high mountains, the town is one of the biggest winter sports resorts in South America. It is the Argentinean capital of artisan chocolate, and mixes Central European influence with native traditions.

Originally populated by different native tribes, the modern settlement grew in the last decades of the 19th century around the shop of the German immigrant Carlos Wiederhold. Its development reached a peak in the 1930s, with the completion of the railroad, the creation of the national park, and the construction of several emblematic buildings. The Civic Centre and the Neo-Gothic cathedral, as well as some famous Bariloche hotels were built to resemble a Swiss village.

We loved the town and the friendly people.

We loved the town and the friendly people. The only inconvenience was that our flight was canceled because of a snowstorm, but that was beyond anyone's control. One place we would not recommend is Gino's Cafeteria, as the service was very poor and the staff were not welcoming. Other than that, the chocolate was amazing, the food in general was excellent, and the rest of the restaurants we visited were great. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and would definitely visit Bariloche again.

The city has been ruined with inappropriate modern developing, The city when we first visited years ago was quaint with many timber structures, now it could be any ware. As a city it is well located for touring the lakes and it is well served by air. I would however suggest choosing a hotel that is not ib the city.

We went in the fall and stayed for 6 days.

We went in the fall and stayed for 6 days. The cold is intense and the sunny days are beautiful. We took the bus to the parks and accessed the cable cars, we went hiking, horseback riding, and we really enjoyed the downtown area, walking to many places. We had researched the cost of living in the city beforehand, and I traveled with a set budget for "nicer" meals and another for coffee, chocolates, and grocery shopping to eat at home; it was all just right.

Bariloche is mostly a touristic city, almost all the buildings for over 20 km of lakefront are hotels or restaurants. The road connecting them is rather narrow and long traffic jams are to be expected at peak hours. The overall scenery is spectacular, with lakes, forests and mountains. The Llao-Llao Hotel is something apart for its location, comfort and activities.

We are so glad we got to visit San Carlos de Bariloche. It’s such a beautiful, vibrant, town. It’s surrounded by mountains and plenty of lakes and rivers. It has snow during the winter and gets warm and cozy during the summer, making it a great destination for both seasons. There is plenty to explore, and the views are gorgeous. There are many breweries (the Patagonia Brewery is located near Bariloche on Circuito Chico), chocolate shops and great restaurants. We visited in summer and wished we could stay more. Absolutely recommended!

The perfect place to rest after a long hike. The hotel has a sauna and an indoor swimming pool that feel so good after a day outside. The restaurant serves very nice food, and the breakfast is varied and generous. I especially loved the spacious common areas, they’re very comfortable and have stunning views. The people working there are incredibly friendly and helpful, which makes a big difference. And the location is ideal: close enough to the centre to walk, but still quiet.
