Not a major center of tourism, but Tortosa makes a good base for exploring the Terres de l'Ebre region. We ate outside at the park in the city center a couple of times, and felt like we were the only non-Spaniards in town (which was great).

We were travelling so only stayed one night ( had done this the previous year too). It depends what you want. There is the more modern side of the city which is all that I had seen before and didn't appeal to me. But having stayed at the Parador de Tortosa made me aware of the beauty of the old part of the city and the incredible views of the mountains. Walking by the very large and fast flowing river and the birdsong also appealed to us. I personally probably wouldn't stay In Tortosa more than two nights, but I would definitely stay there again, at the Parador de Tortosa, if I was travelling in the area. Challenging as a vegan to find vegan food, but the breakfast at the Parador made up for that!

Tortosa's location and architectural heritage, natural environment, history etc. have a great potential, but it looks as if the city had neglected the opportunity to become a more important spot to attract visitors, considering its strategical location between Barcelona and Valencia on the coast.

The historic centre was lovely and very interesting, with old cloisters and a museum. There is a Civil War Museum which looked good, but we didn't have time to visit. Tortosa was very badly bombed during the 1930s Civil War. Some great little cafes and good atmosphere. We were very disappointed by the cathedral, but loved the Roman Excavations Museum in front of it. A definite must see for anyone interested in history.

Easy to walk around the old town and we popped in to the Central market, which is worth a look. We had a good meal at Restaurante Cocteleria Xapla on the edge of the River Ebro and had a drink on their terrace overlooking the Cathedral, castle and river

Access to the city of Tortosa by foot means climbing a lot of stairs, you can also park your car in a parking space near the entrance of the parador just before the castle walls to be on the same level as the city. Tortosa is not very special (except the cathedral) there are some monasteries in the proximity (like Poblets) which are spectacular for a visit as well as the Ebro river side close to the sea (boattrips etc).
