Pontgibaud is an ideal location to stay for visiting Auvergne. It has a Maison de Sante with great doctors. One or two interesting shops and a small weekly market and of course bakeries with excellent bread and pastries.

Do you like Starbucks or do you go to local coffee shops and savour the variety? If you are Starbucks then these La Poste hotels are not for you. These old ‘stagecoach’ inns are quirky, different, not predictable. For predictable book Ibis, for a little spice of variety book a La Poste. This Inn is almost 200 years old, a little Fawlty Towers in places, but with a warm welcome and a good restaurant. Not a fan of bland? Then go to a La Poste

Staff is very friendly, hotel is dog friendly (you still have to pay for a dog though). Restaurant is nice but 50/50 - my diner was delicious, my husband order different dishes and they weren’t very good. Room is simple and comfortable but a bit old.

Breakfast was sub-standard for the price of the hotel and the cost of the breakfast. The choice was very basic and nothing really was an option for the dietary requirement of gluten-free. Not much selection of cereals, and only one option of bread.

Property was convenient for our one night stay on the way through to Bordeaux. While the hotel is dated the bedding was comfortable, towels fresh and clean and the heating was excellent. We also ate at the restaurant that night and it was great.
