FAQs about hotels in Southampton

Historic Port of Walls

Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.

There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.

Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.

There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.

If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

An underrated city that hides its light under a bushel.

An underrated city that hides its light under a bushel. Full of little gems that hide behind a fairly anonymous town centre - you have to go looking for them. Beautiful parks are a big highlight; lots of small museums and good restaurants/pubs. The old town walls are bizarrely hidden in loading yards and car parks, but worth seeking out if you like that sort of thing. Surrounding villages like Hamble, Bursledon and Bishops Waltham are worth visiting too, and the proximity to the New Forest, Winchester, the Isle of Wight and the South Downs make the location a big selling point too.

Very busy! I’m guessing a cruise ship had recently arrived…. The area where we were staying was very very noisy and very dirty but that’s just inner city living…there were however lots of great bars and restaurants literally a minutes walk from where we were staying. The new shopping centre was great..clean and accessible.

Good hub for getting to other places in England.

Good hub for getting to other places in England. Trains to everywhere are available; we went to London and back. We didn't get to do much in Southampton because of a heatwave in the mid 90's, but one free day in Southampton would be enough for us. I would have enjoyed walking the city wall.

Good location. Easy drive to Southampton cruise terminal. Breakfast excellent. Staff exceedingly helpful. Very clean and bright. Didn't expect much as I believed it to be a basic 'motorway stop off' hotel. So pleased with everything at such an excellent price that we have booked for January when we sail again from Southampton.
