I would definitely recommend the Kololi area.
I would definitely recommend the Kololi area. However, it is important to remember that The Gambia is one of the poorest countries in the world, and many people truly depend on tourism to survive. Buying a souvenir, fresh juice on the beach, or tipping the staff at breakfast or in your room can genuinely make a difference to someone’s day. We also brought small gifts like balls for children during excursions, and bringing clothes you no longer need is also very appreciated.
Even small things can help — for example, taking leftovers with you after eating at a restaurant instead of letting them go to waste. There will almost always be children or local fruit vendors who are incredibly grateful for it. The people are incredibly friendly and many are simply trying to survive and support their families, so even when saying no to sellers, it is important to do so kindly and respectfully.

Kololi is a beautiful and vibrant area, full of life. Plenty of places to eat, relax, party. Nearby shops, banks, foreign exchange, atms. Taxi's always available. What more could anyone ask for. Everything you require on your door step.
Paradiso wonderful place to eat, staff were very friendly and the Manager made us feel so at home as if we were family.
Reos another good place to eat, good food and lovely surroundings.
GTS wonderful staff, good food, somewhere to chill out and enjoy good music.

For a small town there were a lot to do some good restaurants clubs weren't my scene but would appeal to others, didn't like the street touts were bit annoying but I understand there need to scrounge.

It's the closest place to the UK that is properly hot in the middle of winter. It's in Africa, so obviously has an African vibe.
Once you get used to it it's great. It is a very safe place if you have basic street skills.

Overall a pretty nice place.
After reading some of the most recent reviews I was wondering about the pool situation (after booking I did get a notification about ongoing construction still), but during my time there were no more renovations and it was fully functional and clean.
Almost all the staff was extremely nice, helpful and professional.
The wifi was fine in the bungalow I was staying in, power does cut in and out a lot (and sometimes stayed off for a while) but I doubt that‘s a hotel-specific problem, so no complaints there.

Balafon is a nice hotel part of a locally run chain. The pool is nice and the beach is perfect.
The cook is doing a great job and the staff is friendly (with one exception). The rooms are spacious and nicely equipped. I like sitting in front of the room in the small garden which comes with it.

The grounds were fantastic, good location to the beach. Guys around pool getting sunbeds and towels for you were great. Location of the hotel brilliant. The size of the apartments in the Springs block were a good size. Clean but tired.
