This is the effective, cheaper alternative to Fairy Meadows - the other side of Nanga Parbat but without the significantly tiring 2.5 to 3 hour hike uphill. At 9000 ft, Monte Vista sits at a commanding position with snow capped mountains all around and beautiful pine forest. You will be filled with awe as the towering Nanga Parbat is in "touching distance". Plan two days in Astore and on day two, you must do the 90 minute hike up to Rama lake. You will see a lush green high altitude polo ground and the densely forrested Rama meadows on the way. Rama lake has the majestic Nanga Parbat in the background. At your base, you can enjoy an outdoor breakfast by the small pristine lake where kids can enjoy paddle boating for free. For dinner, freshly made trout is a must with a bonfire in place. The road to Astore is poor, but I planned to go to Deosai Plain where you can see the beautiful Sheosar lake and be greeted by curious Marmots ! Astore is definitely now on my re-visit list.
