Nice, spacious rooms with extra high ceilings have plenty of room for our family of 4. Lovely welcome details like fresh squeezed juice and natas, as well as detailed maps and restaurants lists were nice touches.

Everything! The price was lower than many others. The location is top, bus stations are very close. The house is a monumental old building, very nicely renovated. There is a pool, good free wifi, the rooms were comfortable and clean, there was a balcony. Breakfast is ok, maybe not so many choices but they offer a very nice selection of fresh fruit which was a big plus for me.

Hotel location is very good, Coimbra University and Botanical garden are just a short walk away. Hotel is good and the staff is very friendly and welcoming. They went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and also provided us with the baby crib. In the morning, a good breakfast was served that had enough options to choose from.

Not fancy but comfortable. Cleanness surprised us, we couldn’t find a spot of dust. The hotel is managed by a family with a staff that are always ready to help. The location is wonderful, with stores, restaurants and “pastelarias”, or coffee shops all around. In less than 50 meters (or yards) you can enjoy A Briosa, one of the best coffee shops in Coimbra. They don’t serve breakfast, but with so many options around, it may be an advantage, as you can have different experiences during your stay. The hotel is in front of a square and the area is always busy, but the sound proof windows leave all the noise outside. We definitely would come back to Hotel Larbelo.

FAQs about hotels in Coimbra

A Seat of Learning and Royalty

Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.

The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.

The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.

The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.

Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.

A super interesting city for Portuguese history lovers, and a beautiful city for everyone to see- the university through the years, from very old times to young adults today, is wonderful, and a little mini Portugal site for kids, but the adults liked it too.

The university campus is beautiful and the museums are very interesting, the town itself is really well maintained and the restaurants are also good, some better than others so check it out on whatever apps you use to get the best food, its all there. The zoological gardens are a paradise worth visiting, next to the Uni campus.

Lotsa history here!

Lotsa history here! It’s all in a pretty compact area , but in very steep slopes, so be prepared to climb, descend, huff and puff! Barcelona for drinks. Medina outside for lunch (beautiful view of old town gate). Visconde for pastries, coffee and caldo verde! Be sure to tour the university and see the old library there. The Se Vehlo (old cathedral) is spectacular! Go to the Santa Clara church and be sure to have a beer/ coffee at the attached cafe opened in 1923.

Coimbra is an amazing city with plenty of events happening.

Coimbra is an amazing city with plenty of events happening. The baixa area - downtown is a tourist hot-spot and is filled with cafés restaurants and shops that are ideal for browsing. The mondego river which is nearby is beautiful and it's possible to walk in the verdant Parc Verde alongside it, to eat at the restaurants in the "docas" (docks) area beside it. You can also walk across the river on the pedestrian bridge to the waterspouts area. Uphill is the lively university area, with museums, and the botanical gardens. And of course, incredible views! It's a beautiful historic town, with a vibrant night life and a bustling daytime tourist area.

Quirky old town with steps and cobbled walking streets. The university at the top of the hill was a complete surprise, beautiful architecture and plaza. Great flat walkways along the river side. Plenty of good restaurants and cafes. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Will visit again.

One of my best stays in Portugal. Dreamy, palatial (had my own ballroom lol), spacious & private. With an exceptional breakfast and friendly hosts. And only two guest rooms in the entire property. And Coimbra is a beautiful, intriguing town which I preferred to over-touristed Porto. One of my Portugal picks on my 4 week trip. So book Alto Canto for the perfect stay! Obrigada ladies and all the best.

Easy access, parking is available, friendly host and reacts very quickly to all questions, requests. Place is clean with private bathroom. It was very clear description how to get to the village. There is restaurant named "Mila" next door. It is not only sign that you arrived, but also have good kitchen. We recomend to have dinner here, if you want to experience Portugal food.

- Good hotel with kids as it had a mini park in the swimming pool area. So close for parents to keep an eye on them. There was also an other activities room for kids. - The Breakfast was great and had a large variety of both savoury and sweet. - Can walk on river front from hotel to city centre - Had some discounts for sightseeing like "Portugal dos Pequenitos"

Fantastic spacious apartment in a great location in the old town. Staff at Hotel Oslo were wonderful and breakfast exceeded expectations. Secure parking, at another site(short walk) was a bonus. A warning for travellers, pack light, the cobblestones and stairs can be a challenge if you have big suitcases.
