This without a doubt the best accommodation I have stayed in Portugal. You notice about everything that the owner has paid attention to every single detail about the accommodation to make your stay feel perfect. Absolutely no shortcomings. Every aspect was simply perfect. If you need to stay in the Trancoso region this is without a doubt the best place to stay. Also the breakfast was so well taken care of with home make cakes. Trancos is an ancient walled town set high up on a granite plateau, A wonderful base for hiking on the Aldeas Historicas paths and and having more than its full share of excellent restaurants. Don't expect lively evenings in street cafes, this is a small rural town which is trying to get on the tourist map. It is also a good stopping off point for a number of boulder castle villages in the district.

The walled Tancoso can be walked easily!

The walled Tancoso can be walked easily! The castle and the Jewish quarters are sites of interest. Trancoso has a couple of options for restaurants and bakeries - one should try the Sweet Sardines of Trancoso

the self catering apartment was like a cave or converted...

the self catering apartment was like a cave or converted garage and the shower was so complex that I couldnt use it. When I did manage to turn it on the flimsy tray filled with water like a paddling pool.

We were welcomed by Ricardo: very informative and welcoming. The hotel is lovely. It has been beautifully restored and furnished. The hotel has an interesting history which is documented in the information book in the bedroom. Very good quality towels and bed linen and a lovely shower room. The hot el states that there is no parking but there is ample parking on the square in front of the hotel. We were travelling by motorbike and Ricardo allowed us to park in the gardens to the rear of the hotel. Perfect!

The property was very comfortable and having stayed in many hotels accross the world I would say this could very easily be considered a 4* hotel, clean and modern, I stayed in room 7 but saw doors open to other rooms and I don't think they have all been renovated but the room I stayed in was excellent!

Excellent breakfast and plentiful. The staff were efficient, helpful and friendly. The hotel is very well situated and within easy reach of banks, restaurants and tourist attractions. I will definitely stay there again and recommend it to anyone visiting the town.

We took a rest day In Trancoso after 10 days of walking on the GR22. Vale a Pena was a perfect choice - comfortable, friendly and good location beside the historic centre.
