SingaporeHotel staff were very friendly and helpful especially John Jiang (I hope i got his name correctly). A few times before we left the hotel to explore the city, he was there to give us advice and answered all our queries. The breakfast was very good too. Very value for money and we enjoyed our stay there. Will return to this hotel if we ever visit Tainan again. Location is about 15 mins walk from the train station.

Amazing that there are so many cultural, historical, culinary sites in such a small area. Definitely worth it to hire your own driver.
Favorite spots were Anping Tree House, Oyster Farm boat ride (with all you eat grill of fresh oysters!) and the Salt Flats at sunset.
We planned ChiMei museum on our last day because it is close to the High speed rail we were taking back to Taipei- amazing, could have spent days there alone.

We were expecting better according internet, the old city is very limited, But Dutch (Hollander) Forts, and Koxinga story interessing.
3 days were enough for us, even if we missed the confucius temple (opening aperture did not fit our possibilities).
I can not precise exactly where we went.

Tainan is set up to cater for Asian (Chinese/Taiwanese)...
Tainan is set up to cater for Asian (Chinese/Taiwanese) visitors - we saw very few westerners (about a dozen) during our 3-night stay.
Limited English (if at all) is spoken in Tainan - Use Google Translate (English to Chinese Traditional (Mandarin). On-street food establishments have few (if any) English Menus.
Getting to Tainan from Taipei is easy - use the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) - book on Klook up to 4 months in advance, book an actual train up to 29 days ahead on the TSHR mobile App and collect your tickets from any THSR desk in any HSR station before travel - it may seem a complex system, but it is easy and works. Non-Taiwanese passport holders can get 50% discount on the HSR through Klook. The HSR is brilliant - we reached 294 km/hr (184 mph) at one stage. It is possible to take an early morning train from Taipei to Tainan, spend the day at Tainan's major city centre tourist attractions and take a late evening train back to Taipei.
There are three notable city centre tourist attractions in Tainan worth visiting - Chikan Tower, Confucious Temple and Hauaski Department Store (does not open until 11:am).
Most other Tainan tourist attractions involved travelling well outside the city centre - you need a taxi or book a tour with a local operator.

I loved the market food and overall feel

I stayed close to the train station because day tours...
I stayed close to the train station because day tours departed from there. But if travelling by yourself, the bus system will take you where you need to go. It is worth visiting down the side streets in the west-central district to find little shops and picturesque alleyways. The noodles at "葉明致-青年店" down lane 226, off Qingnian Rd, in West Central District, are delicious.

If you want to experience Taiwan, without the crowds or...
If you want to experience Taiwan, without the crowds or hustle of an urban city (Taipei), come to Tainan. It has a more traditional experience for you. Walk the streets at night, try food stalls, a different bubble/jelly (milk) tea combination, hit up a night market, and appreciate all the colourful and well maintained shrines!

We loved MSUG Hotel. Stayed for three nights. Perfect location in West Central District close to Tainan Fine Arts Museum and other interesting places. Brilliant cook that makes a lovely Chinese breakfast. Extremely friendly hosts that provided great service - even tracked down a taxi where I’d left my sunglasses. Additional great and unexpected feature after two weeks of biking in Taiwan: the washing machine in the room enabled us to clean our clothes ourselves. Lovely rooftop terrace with fridge for drinks self service.

Beautifully designed hotel. Good snacks and coffee/tea facilities. Rooms are well designed, very comfortable beds and good TVs. Also loved the shower, amazing water pressure. Staff also smiling and able to help with any request. A large lobby that's great for relaxing or organising onward travel. Great location in central Tainan, walkable from all main attractions.
