It was hushed! I started my journey from Philly at 0300 in the morning. My appointment was at 1100 in Saxe, Virginia, and I walked around the woods for about four hours. At about 1630, I made it to the hotel, and I was beaten!

Historic building with a modern twist. Comfortable and close to everything FarmVille has to offer. Heinz the owner was so helpful and around to help if needed. Heinz is kind and we loved meeting his girls. There is also an event space that is perfect for weddings or other events. We were made to feel like we were home. Thanks!!!!

It was a larger town than I thought it was.

It was a larger town than I thought it was. Evidently, a big bicycle destination. Not only was their a nice shop who rented bikes, but our hotel also had bikes available and people were driving into town with bikes on their cars. Every one seemed open and friendly and we were there when the local farmers were selling their wares. Really nice.

We enjoyed walking on Main Street with all the interesting shops. The High Bridge Trail, about 6 miles out of town, is well worth seeing and the High Bridge trail in Farmville looked enticing, but we we too tired to hike. Bandido's Restaurant was a good place for Mexican meals. We also dined at Charley's Waterfront Cafe-a very charming place.

A college town feel where the college and the town merge. Wonderful old main street area that is not (yet) swollen with tourists. Lovely range of traditional cafes & diners. Nice, out-of-the-way, with warm locals. Worth a side-trip as an overnight visit. Stay at the Weyanoke.

The reason for our visit to the area was to bike the High Bridge Trail, which was excellent. We were charmed by Farmville's downtown preservation efforts and enjoyed walking around. We had drinks beside the river at Charley's the afternoon of our arrival, very nice. Later on, we loved Hotel Weyanoke's rooftop bar. On the day we biked the trail, we stopped in town for brunch at Walker's Diner - the atmosphere, the food, the folks, all terrific! I would recommend a weekend in Farmville for charm, food and the relaxed vibe.

Farmville is a beautiful, historic central Virginia town,...

Farmville is a beautiful, historic central Virginia town, with far more amenities, interesting shops, and good restaurants than its humble-sounding name might suggest. It even has two universities! It is also one of the towns on a self-guided driving tour (pamphlets on which are available at the Hotel Weyanoke and other spots downtown) to historically significant spots related to education, in particular education for the African American community, over the last century or so. As you may know, many towns and cities in Virginia closed their public schools on the mid 20th century rather than comply with Federal desegregation mandates. White citizens set up 'private academies' for their children, which were basically much the same as the public schools that had been shuttered rather than admit African American students. African American families and communities had to set up their own schools with far fewer resources available to them. However, many decades later, Farmville became one of the only cities in America that made reparations to African American students who had had to suffer during the years when no public schools were in operation. The city offered to pay tuition costs for higher education for those students who had been denied a good portion of what should have been their K-12 public education. Many more of the students -- who were in their 50s or 60s by then -- responded to this offer by saying yes. As I recall hearing, the town made good on its offer for everyone who was interested. Farmville is a great little Virginia town in a beautiful setting, with a multitude of cultural, historical, shopping, antiquing, and outdoor recreational options downtown or nearby, making this a great getaway spot for people in the Washington, DC, area, as well as Richmond,, Charlottesville, Lexington, and northern North Carolina. I highly recommend a visit!!

We loved the location to the Civil War museums which was our main interest. The historic district was very nice as well with shopping, a coffee shop and restaurants. The Visitor Center was helpful and the employees were wonderful.
