Masaya Casas Viejas

Minca

Masaya Casas Viejas is a hostel located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, surrounded by mountains, coffee plantations, rivers, and tropical forest.

I was worried we would be too remote from the hub in Minca to really enjoy the area, especially after experiencing the road up to the hostel, but I was wrong. Everything we needed was right there. We were more than happy to hike to all the things we wanted to see but you could just as easily take a moto or 4x4. The food was great. The people were even better. We really didn’t want to leave.

Sana Mar has become an absolute haven for me, and staying there for the second time only deepened my appreciation for what makes this place so special. From the moment you arrive, it feels personal, cozy, and thoughtfully created—a true sanctuary from the loudness, intensity, and heat of Santa Marta. What stands out most is how deeply Justin, the owner, genuinely cares. His commitment to sustainability is not just a label—it is woven into the daily life and philosophy of the hostel in ways that are both meaningful and inspiring. From composting and recycling systems to the use of eco-friendly products, cleaning with vinegar instead of harsh chemicals, environmentally conscious soaps, brown recycled toilet paper, and countless other intentional details, it is clear that every aspect of Sana Mar has been designed with care, responsibility, and environmental consciousness in mind. This is the kind of place where sustainability feels authentic rather than performative. Justin’s thoughtfulness is visible everywhere, creating an atmosphere that is not only welcoming but deeply aligned with values of care—for guests, for the planet, and for the overall experience of peaceful living. Sana Mar is more than just a hostel; it is a refuge. A calm, mindful, and beautifully curated space that offers comfort while proving that hospitality and sustainability can coexist seamlessly. I am incredibly grateful for places like this, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful, eco-conscious stay in Santa Marta.

The host is very friendly, helping us with a reliable airport shuttle, local recommendations and a ride to Minca. The room that we stayed at was exceptional, with plenty of room, a stunning view and comfortable beds. Even the bathroom is a true jungle experience. I recommend staying at the Pistacho Hostel!

The location is magical—peaceful, lush, and perfectly tucked away from the center, giving a true sense of being immersed in the jungle while still feeling comfortable and safe. Waking up surrounded by nature and birdsong was pure joy. Staying at Minca Seasons Birds was truly unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, the owner made us feel not just welcome, but genuinely cared for. Their kindness, warmth, and attention to every detail turned our stay into something very special—we felt more like guests in a home than visitors at an accommodation. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and prepared with so much thought, especially for non–meat eaters.

If you want to stay in Taganga, this is a great location and great value. The hosts are extremely welcoming and kind. They let me check in in the morning after the night I had reserved and allowed me to sleep as much as I wanted. They cooked a complimentary lunch for all the guests. They organized a boat tour for the quests the following day. It felt more like staying with family than a hostel!

I think this seemed like a place that everyone went for a night out including people that don’t stay there. nice enough staff, bathrooms in dorms and elsewhere which was great. definitely a party hostel but clean. I was absolutely fine but heard that other people had issues with safety in the area but I think that’s an issue of being aware an careful. hostel is safe.

I have stayed in two other hostels in Santa Marta and this one was definietly The best. The staff is really friendly, it is really clean and The beds are perfectly designed for travellers needs - it has lamps, curtains & plugs. It is like having your little room inside of The room. The beds are also really big. The location in in The center. Nice kitchen, swimming pool & terrace. Great breakfast included. It is just a little bit more expensive than The cheapest options in Santa Marta and 100% worth it.

The staff were excellent, and gave us advice on where was safe to walk and where to avoid. The little pool outside of our room was a welcome bonus! The rooms were spacious and cleaned daily, a real luxury for a hostel! You can also store luggage here...
