A small (but, importantly, not tiny) cottage with all facilities fairly close to Strahan jetty suited perfectly for an overnight stay (in our case before Gordon river cruise). Fifteen or so metres from the porch to the waterfront. Some artwork to...

Nestled in the heart of Lettes Bay, where the wilderness whispers its secrets and the waves tell ancient tales, The Artist’s Cottage is a heritage-listed sanctuary for dreamers, creators, and lovers of life’s quiet magic. Owned by Tasmanian entrepreneur & artist Kate and her foodie & writer husband Jay, this idyllic retreat offers absolute waterfront serenity, artistic inspiration, and the rare charm of a place where time slows down and the soul can breathe. Artist’s Cottage is a peaceful retreat at the edge of an island at the bottom of the world, you’ll find everything you need for a luxurious, relaxing, peaceful stay. Every inch of The Cottage has been painstakingly restored including a stylish new kitchen and bathroom. Featuring an ever evolving array of original works by Kate and other Australian artists, an extensive library of fascinating books and artists materials for our guests to use, the space is designed to feed the mind, body and soul. Relax in the bath tub with a view of the bay, cook up a delicious Tasmanian feast in the kitchen or simply sit on the covered veranda and gaze out over the water. Please note, although there is wifi at the Cottage and phone reception throughout West Coast Tasmania can be patchy so we recommend downloading arrival details including key code prior to starting your journey. What's amazing is the setting. Right on the shoreline, this heritage cottage is former worker's shack, where hard working Queenstown residents would catch the train to the fresh air of Macquarie Harbour for the weekend. We have a double kayak and life jackets if you want to explore the area from the water. Or simply unhook the hammock and rest up. The cabin dates back to the 1940s. We can only estimate this as the records are patchy. It was built by workers of the Mt Lyell Mining Company.
Kate & Jay are a husband and wife team that live in Sydney and Launceston, Tasmania. They share a passion for renovating homes and the Artists Cottage captures what they are about - style, simplicity and heritage. Kate likes to paint while she’s staying here. Jay likes to cook. Both love to write while watching their dogs splashing in the water.
The Artist’s Cottage is set on the shoreline of Macquarie Harbour hidden amongst the Heritage Listed miners village of Lettes Bay, a short drive from Strahan. Secluded in the World Heritage listed rugged West Coast of Tasmania, this is a magical place where the weather is ever changing and the natural beauty breathtaking. While Lettes Bay is a secluded sanctuary, it is only 3 km from Strahan's restaurants, pharmacy, supermarket and world heritage cruise terminal and about 1 km from the wilderness railway. The Cottage is all yours to enjoy with shared outdoor space throughout the old miner’s village for our guests and other cottage owners to share including jetties over the water. Sometimes it’s quiet and at other times you may find the village buzzing with activity - fishing, creative pursuits, boat building. You have the option to partake using the amenities available in the Cottage or simply relax and enjoy watching the activity from your private veranda. Listen to the birds. Are their tunes different to what you normally hear? Perhaps it’s a pink robin or a swift parrot. One bird you can’t miss are the ducks. These aren’t native Tasmanians, brought in almost 100 years ago by the My Lyell Mining Company for the enjoyment of their workers. These ducks are friendly and will come inside the cabin if you let them. Warning - their manners are quite rude and will poop everywhere. Best leave them outside. The harbour has the endangered morgean skate. You may not see these, but out in the kayak it’s not uncommon for a seal of two to follow along with you. They also pop up under the piers. Away from our cabin, the area has whales and dolphins, fairy penguins, wombats and devils. If you spot a Tassie Tiger, keep the secret to yourself.
