Our family home sits in southern Lankaran, five minutes from the sea and eight from the old bazaar by car. When you book it, the whole house is yours — both floors, the garden, the garage, everything behind one gate. The two floors are completely different, and we like them both. Downstairs was renovated recently: open-plan living and dining, and a new kitchen with a oven and a large fridge, so cooking for a family is easy rather than a compromise. Upstairs is the older part of the house — carved pine ceilings, pine floors, arched windows, a dining table for six, and a sitting room that opens onto the balcony. The garden is where guests actually spend their evenings. Lawn on three sides, fruit trees at the back, and a big fan palm with a table and six chairs underneath it. The mangal is there and ready to use. There are two bedrooms — one with a double bed, one with two single beds — plus a sofa bed in the living room. Six guests fit comfortably. One bathroom with a shower, and a separate toilet. Air conditioning for summer, radiators throughout for winter, 100 Mbps Wi-Fi, a washing machine, and a samovar in the kitchen. Parking for two or three cars inside the yard, plus a garage. What we like about this part of Lankaran is how much sits within a short drive. Mona and Beluga Beach are 2 km away — clean sand, shaded cabins, showers. The city bazaar and the Khan's Palace museum are eight minutes. The Haftoni thermal springs are fifteen, Khanbulan Lake twenty-five, and Hirkan forest about an hour south. There is a good family restaurant 700 metres from the gate that we send everyone to. Lankaran is the green, humid, subtropical corner of Azerbaijan — tea plantations, citrus groves, rain that keeps everything alive. If you have only seen Baku, it will not feel like the same country.
