L'ALU is the name of a part of the plateau on which the estate is situated, at an altitude of 600-620 metres. Several springs rise here, which together form the L'Alu stream. History shows that the Romans and Napoleon passed through L'ALU with their armies. As a result, the road behind the pasture against the woods still bears the names “Route Romain” and “Route Napoléon”. Napoleon chose L'ALU as his “halt”. From this period onwards, we know that there was a permanent dwelling. The estate's current farmhouse dates from 1864 and was part of the estate of the Counts of Limbourg-Stirum. Until 1993, it was still run entirely on a sharecropping basis, with a total of 90 hectares of pasture and 120 dairy cattle on one of the largest farms in the Ardennes. The buildings were in very poor condition and barely habitable. Nevertheless, the owners felt that the estate, with its unique location and magnificent setting, offered many advantages and decided to buy the 30-hectare farm in 1993. From the outset, the owners wanted to share this beautiful place with guests.
