Philippopolis is one of the ancient names of today's Plovdiv, which was most common over the centuries. Philippopolis is a city with a history of eight thousand years. The territory of the city has been inhabited since the emergence of the first settlements in the 6th millennium BC, despite numerous metamorphoses, expansions and contractions, which makes it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe.According to research on materials from prehistoric settlements on the territory of present-day Plovdiv, the first settlement dates back to the 6th-4th millennium BC.[2] The first fortifications on the Plovdiv hill Nebet Tepe arose in 3800–3600 BC, given the natural protection of the natural elevations.[2] Ancient authors mention that the name of the settlement on the three hills was Eumolpia – after the Thracian mythical hero Eumolp, a companion of Orpheus. Later, the city was inhabited by the Bessi tribe, who established it as the center of cultural and political processes in the Thrace region.[1] In 342 BC, Eumolpia became part of the Macedonian Empire, after Philip II of Macedon conquered it and gave it one of its most popular names – Philippopolis. The settlement of the Three Hills grew into a developed city, which expanded into the plain. In 46 AD, Philippopolis fell within the borders of the Roman Empire and became the capital (metropolis) of the province of Thrace. The most significant preserved archaeological monuments in today's Plovdiv are from the Roman period of development.
