Company info

Perry and Amber Hayward joined the Black Cat family business in 1976, to help build the current lodge. Over the years, we have pitched in for every aspect of the business - cooking, cleaning, front desk, advertising, book-keeping, maintenance. For many years, Perry was the head wrangler and he estimates that he has ridden the equivalent of around the world at least once. He is also the fire chief in the nearby hamlet of Brule. Amber is a writer, with 3 books and many short stories published. Amber also does watercolour painting and she participates in the workshops held at the Ranch three times per year. Perry and Amber are both avid hikers, and enjoy the chance to guide guests on our trails, or provide advice about trails and hiking in the area, including Jasper.

Property info

The Black Cat Guest Ranch is an historic ranch established by Fred Brewster in 1935. His original cabins were replaced with a 16 room lodge in 1976. Each room has a gorgeous view of the front range of the Rocky Mountains. A large common area provides comfortable seating for relaxation, an abundance of bookshelves, our piano and the tables for your delicious mountain-style breakfast. Many hiking trails start from our front door, and a nearby ranch provides horseback riding for our guests. Enjoy a scenic sunset from the gazebo after a day of exploring the attractions of Jasper or other destinations such as Hinton's Beaver Boardwalk, Grande Cache's Sulphur Gates or a trip to Cadomin, including a drive through an old coal mine site. Wildlife abounds in our area. Bring your mountain bike and tour down to Ogre Canyon on a railway access road, stopping in Brule on your way to visit the historic graveyard. We are a small ranch offering a personalized touch and a great sense of camaraderie among our guests.

Neighborhood info

The Black Cat Guest Ranch is situated in a semi-wilderness area on the eastern edge of Jasper National Park. Nestled in the Solomon Creek valley, it is surrounded by foothills and offers stunning views of the Canadian Rockies. Solomon Creek flows nearby, and just 3 km away is a scenic viewpoint overlooking Brule Lake and the Athabasca River. The location provides a peaceful retreat with breathtaking scenery.
