Surrounded by water, Malchow is located between Lake Plauer See to the west and Lake Fleesensee to the east in the Mecklenburg Lake District. The town was founded in the 10th century on an island in Lake Malchow. The swing bridge is located directly at the town harbor in the old town and is opened every hour on the hour to allow ships on the Müritz-Elde waterway to pass into Lake Malchow. What is a nice spectacle for vacationers is often a test of patience for motorists. Worth seeing, besides the old town, is the monastery complex. The Cistercian nunnery was founded in 1298 and converted into a ladies' convent after the Reformation in 1572. The neo-Gothic convent church towers over the town.
