What inspired us to build a cottage here in the heart of Lapland’s nature? In 2021, we visited Äkäslompolo for the first time as a family. The peaceful surroundings, excellent services, and the breathtaking beauty of Lapland immediately captured our hearts. Over the following years, the idea of owning a cottage surrounded by nature gradually grew stronger, and in 2026 that dream finally became a reality.
In summer, as you wake up and enjoy your morning coffee, you can often spot reindeer wandering around the cottage. Sitting on the terrace, you may hear the call of a cuckoo or the cheerful singing of small birds, but otherwise the surroundings are wonderfully quiet. In winter, a blanket of pure white snow covers the landscape, and the Northern Lights frequently dance across the sky above the cottage.
No matter the season, there is always something to do. Cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, cycling, or exploring one of the many wilderness huts and campfire sites where you can grill sausages and enjoy the outdoors. During the summer, you can cycle to the shore of Lake Äkäslompolo for a refreshing swim or ride around Lake Kesänkijärvi and stop for pancakes and coffee at the charming Kesänkikeidas café. Sometimes, however, children's favourite activity is simply collecting sticks from the nearby forest and building little dens around the cottage.
One of our own favourite activities is exploring the area on electric mountain bikes. Numerous scenic trails start nearby, and even less experienced cyclists can comfortably ride to places such as Kukastunturi. The effort is rewarded with stunning views over the beautiful Lapland landscape.
A wide network of cross-country ski trails and cycling routes starts right from the doorstep of Villa Liemu. The nearest cafés, Navetta Galleria and Café Solmu, are only a few hundred meters away and can be reached on skis, by bicycle, or via the road. In addition to delicious pastries, Navetta Galleria offers a selection of beautiful Lapland-inspired artwork.
The nearest grocery store, Jounin Kauppa, is approximately 3.5 km away by road. It offers a wide selection of groceries, local delicacies, ready-made meals, and everything you need for cooking during your stay.
The ski slopes are easily accessible by car or by ski bus. The nearest ski bus stop is located less than one kilometer away at the Karilantie intersection. The same bus stop also provides a direct connection to the airport. The ski bus serves both the Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi sides of the Ylläs ski resort.
For a unique way to experience the beauty of Lapland’s nature, horse riding and husky safaris are available just a few kilometers away at Konijänkkä (https://konijankka.fi/).
Äkäslompolo is home to several excellent restaurants where you can enjoy a variety of culinary experiences. If you would like to watch a game while enjoying food and drinks, Public House Selväpyy (https://selvapyy.fi/) is a great choice. Traditional sautéed reindeer and a diverse menu of other dishes can be found at Restaurant Rouhe (https://www.ravintolarouhe.fi/). Restaurant Jänkkä (http://jankaresort.com/restaurant-yllas/) offers seasonal Lapland-inspired dining experiences, while excellent pizzas are served at Via Tribunali (https://viatribunali.fi/akaslompolo/) and Eväskori (https://www.evaskori.fi/).
