Le Crotoy — a village steeped in history In the Middle Ages, Le Crotoy was one of the most important ports on the English Channel. Its medieval fortress dominated the bay and controlled maritime traffic between France and England. It was from these quays that Joan of Arc was taken by boat in 1430, following her capture at Compiègne, on her way to Rouen where she would be tried and condemned. A commemorative plaque in the village centre still marks this historic moment today. In the 19th century, the arrival of the railway transformed the town into a fashionable resort for Parisians and artists alike. Jules Verne lived here for several years, sailing the bay aboard his yacht the Saint-Michel and writing parts of his celebrated novels. Seurat and Toulouse-Lautrec both painted here, captivated by the extraordinary and ever-changing light of the Baie de Somme.
