Very quiet neighborhood. History of the Capnau district in Béziers. The Capnau district in Béziers, located behind the Madeleine church, takes its name from a contraction of Campus Novus (Latin for "new district"), probably dating from the late 3rd or early 4th century, during the city's expansion beyond the medieval ramparts adjoining the church. Here is an overview of its history. Ancient and medieval origins - Roman period and early Middle Ages: The Capnau district, like other boroughs of Béziers (Saint-Aphrodise, Saint-Jacques), was incorporated into the city's fortifications from the 12th century onwards, under the influence of the Trencavel viscounty. The medieval ramparts, enlarged before 1188, included Capnau, marking its integration into the urban fabric of Béziers. - Albigensian Crusade (1209): Béziers, including the Capnau district, was severely affected by the sacking of the city during the crusade against the Cathars. This period marked a turning point in the city's history, with significant destruction, notably of the viscount's castle at the Citadel.
